B.A. Art and Design/Elementary Education

I have been teaching in the Jennings School for fifteen years. I started out at Fairview, but now I make Northview my home.

During my time at Jennings I have had the joy of watching many students grow and change over the years. Many of them I see in the hallways as they engage in the education of their own young children and their younger siblings. One of them is now my colleague at Jennings. There is no greater sense of accomplishment for me than to see these successful and happy individuals as they flourish in their adult lives. This is the reason I became a teacher and is a driving force in my life.

Welcome! I’m so glad you have decided to visit.

My name is Ms. Debra Peterson. I am the mother of a beautiful, successful young woman named Emma. With her hunger for knowledge, creative drive, and love and compassion for her fellow man, she has always been my greatest inspiration. Watching her grow and learn is what ultimately steered me in the direction of education as a career.

Although I was born in St. Louis, I spent most of my early life on the East Side, where I graduated from Cahokia High School. I went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art & Design. After a rewarding career as a graphic designer, I returned to school to follow my heart into education and completed my credentials at Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville. I have been at Jennings School District ever since. It is my surrogate family and my home. I cannot imagine a better place on earth.

I believe that all children can love to learn. School should provide a safe and encouraging atmosphere that allows students to construct meaning and understanding as they pursue knowledge in all content areas. Within this safe haven, children learn to understand the world and themselves through literature. As they read about children and other characters that overcome great odds and achieve great dreams, they begin to see that they themselves can overcome whatever obstacles are placed before them and that they too can achieve their own dreams.
